The Secret Life of a Trader

“If you ask my husband, he will proudly tell you that I am a successful clothing businesswoman and a digital marketer. He trusts me completely. And why shouldn’t he? Every single month, I show him the profits, and I easily pitch in to pay the house rent and buy groceries. He boasts to everyone that he married a brilliant, sharp business woman.”

But the truth is, that clothing business died a long time ago. It went under during the pandemic, and the storefront has been completely empty.”

“My biggest secret started last year. My husband came home beaming after receiving a KSh 500,000 corporate bonus from his job. He handed the cash to me with so much hope in his eyes and said, ‘My wife, hide this money safely in your secret account. By June next year, this is the money we will use to buy that plot of land we’ve always wanted in Kitengela.’ I took the cash and deposited it.”

She hesitated, the guilt evident in her tone. “But instead of leaving it alone, greed got the better of me. A close friend of mine showed me how people were making fast money online through Forex trading. I jumped in head-first, completely blind to the risks.”

“While my husband was at work, I would sit in the house all day staring at screens, I thought I was a genius. But within the very first week, the market slammed me. I lost KSh 200,000 in a flash.”

A massive panic gripped me. The thought of my husband finding out that his entire sweat and blood for the Kitengela land was gone threw me into a dark place. I couldn’t let him know I had ruined us.

So, I locked myself in. I started studying like my life depended on it. I took meticulous technical analysis notes, mapping out strategies as if I was writing an intensive trading course. And slowly, by the grace of God, the market began to turn in my favor. I started recovering the losses, bit by bit.

A small note of pride crept into her voice, mixed with lingering anxiety. “As I speak to you right now, I have traded my way back. I recovered the entire KSh 500,000 capital, and I’ve actually made a substantial profit on top of it—which is the exact money we’ve been using to run the household.”

“Next month is the big month,” she concluded, her voice trembling slightly. “It’s time to buy the Kitengela plot. I have his KSh 500,000 completely intact and ready to hand over to him. He thinks his money has been sitting safely in a bank, entirely untouched. He has no idea that his cash traveled to a Forex broker, stood on the edge of a cliff where it almost vanished forever, and was pulled back by a thread.”

“He doesn’t know his wife is a secret forex trader by day and a wife by night. My conscience is eating me alive. Do I tell him the terrifying truth that I risked our entire future on a computer screen, or do I keep my mouth shut forever since the money is safe?
