{"id":8,"date":"2026-05-21T10:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T10:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/?p=8"},"modified":"2026-05-22T13:05:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T13:05:02","slug":"gridlock-and-grounded-matatus-inside-kenyas-may-2026-fuel-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/?p=8","title":{"rendered":"Gridlock and Grounded Matatus: Inside Kenya\u2019s May 2026 Fuel Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/strke-2-01-1024x559.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/strke-2-01-1024x559.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/strke-2-01-300x164.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/strke-2-01-768x419.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nairobiconfessions.co.ke\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/strke-2-01.jpg 1409w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you tried to catch a ride to work or drop your kids off at school in Nairobi early this week, you were likely met with empty stages, heavily barricaded major highways, and a lot of walking.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nationwide transport strike paralyzed the country&#8217;s transport ecosystem.<sup><\/sup> This was a massive, coordinated industrial action that united matatu operators, digital taxi drivers, truckers, and boda boda riders into a single, unified front.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to understand the fury boiling over on Kenyan roads, we have to look past the blocked highways and dive straight into the numbers that triggered the chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Spark: EPRA\u2019s Mid-Month Bombshell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crisis ignited when the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) dropped its May\u2013June pricing cycle.<sup><\/sup> Driven by a massive <strong>20.3% spike in international landed costs for diesel<\/strong> and volatile geopolitical friction in the Middle East, the regulatory pump prices hit historic, eye-watering highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initial shockwave looked like this in Nairobi:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Super Petrol:<\/strong> Increased by KSh 16.65, pushing it to <strong>KSh 214.25 per litre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diesel:<\/strong> Skyrocketed by a massive KSh 46.29, hitting <strong>KSh 242.92 per litre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the transport sector\u2014which runs almost exclusively on diesel\u2014this wasn\u2019t just a regular price hike. It was an operational death sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the Transport Sector Walked Out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within hours of the announcement, the Transport Sector Alliance announced a total shutdown and suggested an immediate 50% fare hike to survive.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the strike wasn\u2019t just about the raw cost of fuel. Transport operators pointed out a glaring anomaly that exposed a massive loophole in the economic system: <strong>The Kerosene Gap<\/strong>.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While diesel shot past KSh 242, kerosene was left completely untouched by EPRA at KSh 152.78 per litre\u2014subsidized heavily by the state to protect low-income households.<sup><\/sup> This created a massive <strong>KSh 90.14 gap<\/strong> between the two fuels.<sup><\/sup> Operators loudly warned that this massive disparity would force widespread, dangerous <strong>fuel adulteration<\/strong> (mixing cheap kerosene into diesel to cut costs), which ruins commercial engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Panic, The Pushback, and The Pivot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strike took effect at midnight on Monday, May 18.<sup><\/sup> The result? Total paralysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Schools Suspended:<\/strong> The Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) advised institutions to halt day-scholar operations, leaving school buses parked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stranded Commuters:<\/strong> Major arteries like Thika Road (the Githurai\u2013Roysambu stretch), Jogoo Road, and Mombasa Road were completely cleared of public service vehicles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tragic Escalation:<\/strong> What was intended to be a peaceful protest turned volatile, with clashes breaking out across various trading centers, resulting in tragic loss of life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Realizing that a prolonged shutdown would completely tank economic productivity, the executive branch scrambled. Following a directive from the presidency, EPRA did something incredibly rare: they issued an <strong>emergency mid-cycle addendum<\/strong> late Monday evening to break the deadlock.<sup><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Current State of Play<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get wheels turning again, the government reallocated stabilization funds from the Petroleum Development Levy to narrow the dangerous gap between fuels.
